This resource uses philosophical inquiry to explore ideas about art and value. Students will look at and discuss a range of art, make their own art with shapes, listen to opinions and consider factors that might influence their values and opinions.
You can try all 3 sessions or select sessions to suit your learners.
Sessions are intended for 9-13-year-olds but can be adapted for other age groups.
What is good art?
This session invites students to share their own ideas and assumptions about art. Come up with your own definition, choose your favourites from a selection of modern and contemporary art and give reasons to justify what you think is ‘good art’.
Listen to art experts, consider your own views and discuss who might be influencing our own judgements about art. In this session students will consider who they think decides what makes ‘good art’.
This resource supports a range of Experiences and Outcomes in line with the Scottish Curriculum for Excellence, including the following:

Art is a tool that can help us make sense of the world around us. We've gathered resources to help teachers inspire children and young people to develop a positive sense of self, think for themselves, stay well and grow their creativity skills (problem solving, imagination, curiosity and open mindedness).
