June Crisfield Chapman was born in Ayrshire and studied at Glasgow School of Art in the 1950s with a focus on wood engraving. She is best known for her portrait paintings and plant-based wood engravings. Fascinated by theatre and literary characters, Chapman has painted various portraits of actors in character, applying bold and expressive paint strokes to the canvas to bring out the personality of the sitter. With a lifelong interest in plants and botany, Chapman also created wood engravings in black and white inspired by nature and the changing seasons. Chapman lived and worked in Billericay, Essex.
