Chick and her daughter, Leah
About this artwork
The make-up of family units can change over time. In 2016 Margaret Mitchell started to photograph her nieces and nephew again, updating her 1994 series Family. The series In This Place shows that a lot had changed for their family. Margaret’s sister Andrea had died, and her children Steven, Kellie and Chick now had children of their own. However, their individual circumstances had changed very little, and they were all still living in an area ranking highly in the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation (SIMD). Through the story of her own family, Margaret raises questions about the cycle of inequality across generations and how a lack of opportunity repeats itself. How many of our choices in life are predetermined by being born into disadvantage or privilege?
