Andrea and her three children, Steven, Kellie and Chick
About this artwork
Our families can help shape us. Margaret Mitchell started photographing her sister Andrea and her children in 1994 when they were living on the Raploch Estate in Stirling. At the time, the estate ranked highly in the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation (SIMD). Margaret was working on a project exploring identity and social stigma but spending time with her nieces and nephew changed the direction of the project. It became more about the children’s lives. She realised that for them life revolved around their Mum, each other and Grandma’s house. The problems of the estate they were growing up on didn’t really register.
