Bewohner – which is German for inhabitants – is a counterpoint to Rokytník. Beginning with images taken in Berlin and Essen, the city where Hanzlová has lived and worked since 1982, the series also contains photographs made in other European cities including Paris and Antwerp. It suggests a world of loneliness in the metropolis, of isolation and rootlessness. The people and animals portrayed in Bewohner seem somehow not to be at ease with their environment. Horizon lines, prominent in Rokytník, have disappeared.
