June Redfern was born in Fife and studied painting at Edinburgh College of Art. The traditional and academic techniques that she learned at college formed the basis of her painting, helping her to understand how to paint people, landscapes, and perspective. She mostly works in watercolour and oil paint and takes a very expressive approach to her work. Wanting to represent feelings and atmosphere of a place or subject, her paintings tend to be quite large in scale, with a lot of her early work depicting female figures. During the 1980s and 90s she took a bold, expressive approach to her paintings, while in more recent years there is a lighter touch and softness to her canvases. Redfern currently lives and works in London.
