Inge Morath was born in Graz, Austria. She was as fluent in languages as she was in her relationships with the people whom she photographed. Like her colleagues who worked with the Magnum agency, she travelled extensively in Europe, North America and the Middle East. Originally, Magnum had employed her as an editor but she soon discovered that she was an even better photographer than writer. Inge Morath married the leading American playwright Arthur Miller with whom she lived until her death in January 2002.
Magnum is a photographic co-operative founded in 1947 that is perhaps the world’s best known picture agency, renowned for its documentary photography. Many important photographers have been members including Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Eve Arnold and Susan Meiselas.
