1998, 2003-2010

In all her work Hanzlová has been particularly engaged in exploring the relationship between nature and culture. In 2003 she began Here, extending an earlier project into the urban environment of her adopted home of Essen. Her photographs subtly capture the detail of a western industrial city being taken back by nature – seen in images of stunted vegetation, cracked walls and isolated buildings. Hanzlová is interested in the way that the idea of home is shaped by the contradictions of urban nature. Other pictures communicate a feeling of serenity and relaxation, enhanced by the lush vegetation of urban parks and gardens.
