Paolozzi explored the principles of collage not only in sculpture, textiles and works on paper, but also through words. In the book ‘Kex’ Paolozzi combined texts from different sources to produce a continuous flow of words. Paragraphs on biology, horticulture, classical literature, rocket-science, philosophy and many other subjects cancel out individual meanings and make way for new interpretations based on association and juxtaposition. This principle of collage is emphasised by Paolozzi’s decision to have the overall design of the book done in artistic collaboration. The artist Richard Hamilton was responsible for editing and for arranging the text and images.
