  • Artist Rooms
August Sander divided more than 500 images that made up his photographic opus ‘People of the 20th Century’ into seven groups and 45 portfolios. The group ‘The Farmer’ contains twelve portfolios and this image is included in the portfolio ‘The Farmer – His Life and Work’. Here, a farmer stands on a field with his oxen behind him, in front of a background of trees and the sky. The allusion to his next step, with his left leg extended, imbues the photograph with a sense of dynamism and physical activity, suggesting that the farmer is looking into the camera mid-stride. There is a sense of proprietary pride and satisfaction in the presentation of the farmer in his familiar environment which seems far removed from the upheavels in the German political scene at the time.
