This picture of the writer and theatre critic Franz Paul Brückner is one of twelve portraits included in the portfolio entitled ‘The Writer’ within the group ‘The Artists’ from August Sander’s documentary project ‘People of the 20th Century’. The writers were all photographed in Sander’s studio. Most are shown seated, viewed from a frontal perspective against a neutral background and framed in three-quarter length. This arrangement emphasises the sitters’ body language and the details of their dress and facial expressions, which are highlighted by the camera’s sharp focus. In terms of composition, Sander’s portraits of writers hardly differ from the pictures he took of the representatives of other professions, such as lawyers, businessmen and politicians. This similarity in composition was intended to enable a comparison of the sitters and the social types and classes they represent.
