Maud Sulter (Scottish, 1960-2008)
Maud Sulter had Scottish and Ghanaian blood running through her veins. She worked as a writer, a poet, an artist and a curator. Between 1992 and 1994 she was the Principal Lecturer in Fine Art at the Manchester Metropolitan University. Her photographs were usually conceived as a series devoted to a particular theme. The images are accompanied by "a text which is a poem, which is a fictional account of a character". As a black woman artist, Maud Sulter did a lot "to put black women back in the centre of the frame" culturally, historically and socially.
