About this artwork

Pryde Nicholson’s daughter, the designer Nancy Nicholson (1899-1977), was the model for 'Harlequin with Chair'. It is thought to have been painted in the family home in Mecklenburgh Square, London. The black panes of the window and the artificial lighting suggest it was made in the evening. It comes from a series of works in which Nancy is depicted in a Harlequin costume.
