Marianne Faithfull
About this artwork
In the 1970s Marianne Faithfull was well-known in both Britain and America as a singer and as a member of the celebrity jet set. Mapplethorpe photographs her frontally in relation to a strong framework of horizontals and verticals (the balustrade and wall). Faithfull’s arms form the hypotenuse of a right-angle triangle, bisected diagonally by her legs, torso and head. Despite the highly structured composition, Faithfull seems spontaneous and fun-loving.
