Sir Henry Raeburn

Christina Lamont Drummond, Mrs Campbell of Ballimore (1734 - 1810)

About this artwork

Christina or Christian Drummond married around 1760, possibly as her second husband, Colonel Dougald Campbell of Ballimore, Member of Parliament for Argyll in succession to his uncle Sir Duncan Campbell of Lochnell. As an army officer on half-pay, Dougald Campbell owed his brief political career to the patronage of the Duke of Argyll. Widowed in 1764, Christina Campbell is thought to have sat to Raeburn in her sixties and so just prior to his move to a new and larger studio at 16 (now 32) York Place, Edinburgh.
