Street Palm
About this artwork
This print is based on an oil painting called ‘In Tangier’ which incorporates the image of a palm tree, based on the artist’s memory of the view from a hotel in the city. Hodgkin used the same motif to make a number of prints which were also inspired by his memory of large travel posters he had seen on display in the Paris Metro in the 1950s and 1960s. As with many of Hodgkin’s prints, ‘Street Palm’ combines printed and hand-applied colours throughout the entire edition. The print was made using carborundum. This technique allows for the production of a range of effects on the print and was described by Hodgkin as being ‘marvellously liberating.’
