Sir Joseph Noel Paton painted mostly of religious, historical and allegorical scenes and is considered one of the leading British Victorian painters. Paton had eleven children, several of whom became artists. Ranald was the eldest son. He exhibited a portrait of his father at the Royal Academy, London, in 1895. This pencil drawing is the only work by Ranald in the Gallery’s collection.
