Madonna with the Monkey
About this artwork
The high demand for Dürer prints had many implications. After Dürer’s death his widow and his brother Endres probably continued to print from the original copper plates and woodblocks. However, following Endres’ death in 1555 the plates and woodblocks were dispersed. Little is known about their later history and only two plates have survived to the present day, although a number of woodblocks are still in existence. Plates and blocks continued to be used into the nineteenth century; however, constant use diminished their quality. Late impressions, like this one, are mere ghosts but were still regarded as Dürer prints and sold and collected.
