William Strang
War
About this artwork
The allegorical treatment of war in this image typifies the macabre humour which pervades so much of Strang’s work. It shows, under a lowered, threatening sky, the skeletal figure of Death in a tattered soldier’s uniform, beating a drum. In his wake he leaves a trail of destruction and mayhem. The bold sense of scale and the vigorous swing of the composition demonstrate the artist’s mastery of pattern and strong design.
