About this artwork
This spectacular image shows a geyser in New Zealand. The geyser, Te Whatapohu, the Māori word for ‘pain in the stomach’, is so called because of its rumbling indigestive groan. Photographed during a period of very fine weather, this noisy sighing geyser lies on the edge of Lake Rotomahana. Valentine produced many iconic images of early New Zealand landscape and architecture, including studies of the bush and waterfalls.
