High Street from the Netherbow
About this artwork
In 1793 Allan produced drawings of the High Street in Edinburgh looking east and west, which were published as prints. Here the Tron Kirk can be seen on the left, with the perforated spire of St Giles’ Cathedral beyond. The multi-storey building in the road by St Giles’ is the Luckenbooths, named after the lockable booth shops that it housed. Allan has filled the wide street with his Edinburgh characters. See how many trades you can identify.
