Gesturing Hiker
About this artwork
This work on paper is a woodcut print by Steven Campbell, made at the same time as a series of paintings depicting hikers, which includes ‘Owl Butting a Hiker on the Knee’ and ‘Hikers’ Ballet with Yawning Child’. All Campbell’s hikers are similar in character and pose to this one, seen here confidently striding forward with his right hand thrust outwards. The richly textured surface of this woodcut captures the raw weave of the hiker’s tweed clothing. Campbell’s artworks are dominated by alpha male characters like this one, who are frequently set in fantastical landscapes filled with awe and adventure.
