Around 1956 Soulages began a series of lithographs which are possibly the most faithful translation of his working methods as an abstract painter. Titled numerically, this is number six in a sequence of images which use bold brushstrokes applied to the stone in viscous lithographic ink. When asked how the experience of working in lithography differed to etching, Soulages responded by saying: 'This is work that is closer to the spontaneity of painting...'
