Family of Miners, Scotland, 1982
About this artwork
And like that it was gone. Just as quickly as coal mines materialised and came to dominate the landscape, they vanished, leaving no trace of the mining industry in some communities. This photograph was taken in the village of East Wemyss in Fife. The Michael Colliery is still visible in 1982, although the mine had shut down in 1967 after a disastrous fire killed nine men. It is an event that has stayed in the memory of this community. The winding gear loomed over the village for years, a visual reminder of the disaster but was eventually dismantled in 2001.
