About this artwork

Lithographs can be made using a traditional stone surface, or alternatively the printmaker can draw their design on a finely grained zinc or aluminium plate. Elizabeth Blackadder’s lithograph Cats and Flowers was worked up from a small pencil sketch, using six metal plates for the different colours. There are two shades of green in this print, which were printed from the same plate. A paler wash was printed first, then the plate was reworked for the dark green of the flower stems and foliage.
