Design Exercise
About this artwork
Without any design training to steer him, Paolozzi was learning almost as much as his students. The back–to–basics principles of design, influenced by the Bauhaus ethos, coupled with a new cross–disciplinary approach, can be found in the exploration of line and pattern in these simple ink drawings. In 1951 Paolozzi married Freda Elliott (1925–2023), a textile designer. In photographs taken by Nigel Henderson (1917–1985) the same year, Freda is framed by her husband’s screenprinted designs of dots, lines and grids.
