Abendhimmel uberm Gotteskoog [Sunset over Gotteskoog]
About this artwork
Watercolour was the medium perhaps best suited to Nolde's love of colour and to his need to express himself with maximum immediacy. Colours spread out over the wet paper with a life of their own and each work has to be finished quickly all in one go. This watercolour of a landscape in his native north Germany shows Nolde at his most free and intense. Here he limits himself to a few colours, but so skilfully does he vary the density of pigment and so bold is his use of the yellow/purple complementaries that the painting glows like stained glass.
