Drawings of Objects made between 1969 & 1972
About this artwork
In the late 1960s, Paul Neagu created a new category of sculpture he called ‘palpable and tactile objects.’ These were hinged boxes and handmade suitcases that contained smaller sculptures or models within. This drawing captures notes, sketches and photographs of two such objects, and is dated after they were completed. The object in the bottom half of the sheet, White Cardinal, is in the collection. Both objects utilise painted matchboxes and mashed up newspapers to create imaginary architectural structures. His detailed ink drawings label every material used in the objects’ construction. The two photographs attached to the drawing show the sculptures lying open on a patch of grass, emphasising their portable design.
