Pieter Lastman

Pieter Lastman

Born and trained in Amsterdam, Pieter Lastman was in Italy from 1602 to 1607. In Rome he became friends with Adam Elsheimer and Peter Paul Rubens. Soon after returning to his native town he became the most successful history painter in the Northern Netherlands. Among his pupils were Jan Lievens (1619-1621) and Rembrandt (1625).
