About this artwork

This is one of two similar studies in the collection of the National Gallery of Scotland. In this work, one hind leg of the frog is stretched out, while the other is contracted, as when a frog is poised to spring. A cross-section of one of its large webbed feet, included at the top, suggests the study forms part of a detailed record of the frog’s overall appearance and structure. The drawing is not connected with any print or painting, and was probably made to satisfy De Gheyn’s own interest in natural history.
