Hofmann was an extremely important figure in American Abstract Expressionism. This painting is characteristic of Hofmann’s gestural painting where he has smeared, brushed and dabbed the paint onto the surface of the canvas. This contrasts to the introduction of flat rectangular shapes that he began to incorporate in the late 1950s. Colour was important to Hofmann and he often utilised it in bold and contrasting ways. In Green Paradise, the browns and foliage greens seem to relate to the title of the work.
