About this artwork

Cézanne made this lithograph for the art dealer Ambroise Vollard, who wanted to include it in his limited edition album La Deuxième Année de l'Album d’Estampes originales de la Galerie Vollard, published in 1897. Cézanne had been fascinated by the theme of bathers for some time before he made this lithograph, and was developing his series of large-scale paintings on the theme. He was uncomfortable painting nudes from life so often looked to precedents in the work of painters from the past such as Rubens and Titian.
