'Devoted Christian Troops' from the portfolio 'Images of War'
About this artwork
Gonchorova’s Images of War creates an apocalyptic vision of war, which depicts Russia and its allies as a force for good against the satanic evil of the Central Powers which threaten them. This print in the series shows a regiment of the Imperial Russian Army marching to the Eastern Front. Above them a host of angels travel alongside, providing support and protection. The prints use a combination of motifs from Russian religion and folklore combined with present day images. Here, the haloes of the angels are depicted in a style common to Russian Orthodox icons.
