Helen Paxton Brown

'Quite impossible to paint with so many people around'

About this artwork

Like ‘Comment ca va?’ (GMA 1707) and ‘Man Painting Observed by Two Children’ (GMA 1709), this work takes a humorous look at the experience of trying to paint and draw in a public art gallery. The artist is stylishly dressed; her hat seeming extravagant for someone who is painting. Paxton Brown was very interested in fashion; her attitude was that fashion is the result of attention to detail: “A chic woman would always be immaculate, never down-at-heel, invariably well-gloved.”
