The Spirit of the Snake. From As is When
About this artwork
The text around the edge begins: ‘Only remember that the spirit of the snake, of the lion is your spirit. For it is only from yourself that you are acquainted with spirit at all.’ All the prints in As Is When are accompanied by quotes from Wittgenstein’s philosophical writings. Six prints from the series were completed in 1964 and are largely figurative, whereas the prints made in 1965 are pure abstract pattern. The one figurative element of The Spirit of the Snake is a tiny double portrait of Ludwig Wittgenstein (1889–1951) contained within the spots in the bottom left corner.
