Have you ever fancied giving art a go from a different perspective? At the National Galleries of Scotland, we are holding dynamic pop-up sessions in Edinburgh’s beautiful parks and public spaces, where anyone can take part, no matter their age or drawing experience.
These pop-up art sessions bring creativity into the community, inviting passers-by to have fun with drawing, to receive top tips from our artist and to try something new.
It’s all part of our Celebrating Scotland’s Art project, as the Scottish National Gallery undergoes a major development to transform the way we show the world’s greatest collection of Scottish art.
With the support and generosity of The National Heritage Lottery Fund and Sustrans Bike Library, who are providing a cargo bike to transport easels and art equipment, these sessions can travel to different places across the city.
Successful pop-ups have already taken place at St Andrew Square Garden, and the Meadows. And there will be more to come – keep an eye out on our Twitter and Facebook pages to find out where we will be holding our next sessions.
Mara Barth, project learning officer for the National Galleries of Scotland, says: “Art in the Open is a dynamic and accessible pop-up art session that offers a relaxed, chilled atmosphere for anyone of any ability and any age. The leading artist, Damian Callan, is really encouraging in helping people feel comfortable in expressing themselves through art.
“While the work on the Scottish National Gallery Project is ongoing, we want the community to engage with us and these sessions offer a creative and fun opportunity to participate.
“The National Galleries of Scotland holds the largest collection of Scottish art in the world, telling the story of the people and the culture of Scotland. The Scottish National Collection is a fantastic public resource and belongs to everyone.
“A lot of the work in the Scottish National Gallery reflects the Scottish landscape so by making art outside, we explore the inspiration behind the art. We are connecting the past with the present, surrounded by the places and people of Scotland and being inspired to be creative in the outdoors today.”
If you can’t wait to try your hand at some easel sketching we also host regular drop-in sessions in the gallery (great for rainy days).
