Biography
The work of German painter and sculptor Thomas Scheibitz skirts the boundary between figuration and abstraction. Exploiting differences in meaning, he incorporates recurring motifs that display no consistent significance. Such designs are based on a vast archive of imagery, which has been sourced from both personal experience and memory, alongside a variety of media - including magazines, films and newspapers. He reduces this visual vocabulary into a balance between colour and geometric form. Text and language are also intrinsic to Scheibitz’s work. The titles are carefully chosen and the artist is resolute that the work should control the title and not vice-versa. Scheibitz was born in Radeberg, Germany, and studied in Dresden from 1991 to 1996.
