Heinrich Hansen was a Danish artist who specialised in architectural views and interiors. He was a keen traveller, making study tours of Germany (1847), Spain and France, and from 1850-52 he toured England and Scotland. Hansen was also a designer of silverware, porcelain and furniture, and for 22 years he was the design co-ordinator at the Bing & Grøndahl porcelain factory. He was an important figure in the cultural life of Denmark, and sat on the committee of the Charlottenborg's art exhibition. He also led the decorative designs for a number of castle restorations and cathedral chapels. He died, aged sixty-eight, in July 1890 following an extended period of illness.
