About this artwork
In 1913, Annan travelled to Spain, accompanied by the painter and etcher, William Strang. The composition of 'Bullock Cart, Burgos' combines a strength and pride with the simplicity of the subject. The bullocks appear monumental against the low-lit background and the contrast between dark and light creates a sense of delicate movement. This melancholic image evokes D.Y. Cameron's comment on Annan's work, as 'reticent, reserved, weird and tenderly beautiful.'
