The Scottish Colourist Series: JD Fergusson
The culmination of the National Galleries of Scotland’s three year series of exhibitions on the Scottish Colourists; this major retrospective of J.D. Fergusson’s work included over a hundred paintings, sculptures, works and paper and archival material.
J.D. Fergusson was born in Leith and was essentially self-taught. Moving to Paris in 1907, he assimilated and developed the latest developments in French painting; more so than any of his Scottish contemporaries. In 1913 he met the dance pioneer Margaret Morris, who became his life-long partner. Her techniques, students, summer schools and Morris herself all became the main sources of inspiration for Fergusson’s work prior to his death in Glasgow in 1961.
This exhibition was a partnership between the National Galleries of Scotland, Edinburgh and The Fergusson Gallery, Perth & Kinross Council
