About this artwork
Like a number of his contemporaries who were associated with the Institute for Contemporary Arts (ICA) in London, Turnbull was fascinated by the human head (the ICA organized a show in 1953 called Wonder and Horror of the Human Head). One of the things that interested him was how immediately recognisable the human head was, even when the image was far removed from reality.
