Saint John the Baptist in the Wilderness

About this artwork

Saint John points towards the banderole wound round his cross, on which are inscribed the words Ecce Agnus Dei (Behold the Lamb of God), in reference to Christ as God’s sacrificial lamb. The lamb itself appears in a blaze of glory to the right. The pose of Saint John is based closely on a design by Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519).
