About this artwork

Although he didn’t always choose Scottish subjects, Jacob More was one of the earliest native landscape artists to make serious oil paintings of Scotland’s scenery. In this drawing he combined observations from nature with an interest in shapes and arrangements, learnt through his early artistic training as a designer of theatre scenery. The very pared-down composition emphasises the expansive, open terrain.
