About this artwork

Fearne Gardiner was the only daughter of Dr John Gardiner, President of the Royal College of Physicians in Edinburgh. She married George Kinnear, of the Edinburgh-based Kinnear banking family. They had two children together and this portrait was painted around 1805, a few years after the birth of their second child. She is aged around 34 and is fashionably dressed with a sheer black shawl falling in soft folds around her shoulders.
