About this artwork
Onto a crudely executed, pink silhouette of a body Shrigley has outlined a disturbing yet ridiculous scenario in handwritten text. His work often explores awkward or uncomfortable situations like this one which push the boundaries of what is socially acceptable and use humour to mask a quiet sense of unease. Shrigley is best known for his caustic drawings like this one which make crude and humorous observations on everyday life. Handwriting also plays an important role in his work – its raw and uneven style is instantly recognisable as his own. His work hovers between illustration and fine art and he is part of a long line of satirical cartoonists from Edward Lear and James Thurber to Spike Milligan and Gary Larson. His awkward, improvised drawings and musings resemble schoolboy doodles and often contain scribbles, mistakes and corrections.
