Untitled (I go to Sleep)
About this artwork
David Shrigley often makes use of banal, ordinary scenarios, into which he brings a sense of the ridiculous or absurd. Here he has drawn on a photograph taken in a furniture store, using an unsuspecting man behind a pillar as the subject for this artwork. His deliberately anti-establishment statement pokes fun at the commercial nature of modern society. Shrigley is best known for his caustic drawings which make crude and humorous observations on everyday life. His work hovers between illustration and fine art and he is part of a long line of satirical cartoonists from Edward Lear and James Thurber to Spike Milligan and Gary Larson. His awkward, improvised drawings and musings resemble schoolboy doodles and often contain scribbles, mistakes and corrections.
