Rocco Pozzi

Princess Maria Clementina Sobieska, 1701 - 1735. Wife of Prince James Francis Edward Stuart

About this artwork

Although the Stuarts had lost possession of the British throne, they tried hard to maintain the pomp of a royal court. When James Francis Stuart’s wife, Maria Clementina Sobieska, died in 1735 he wished to provide her with the elaborate funeral honours due to a British queen. As Roman Catholics whose main source of support was the Papacy, however, the procession consisted largely of Papal servants and members of Catholic religious orders. When James himself died in 1766, Pozzi modified this print and re-published it as his funeral procession — an economy measure that reflects the declining status of the Stuarts in later eighteenth-century Rome.
