About this artwork

This engraving depicts Mary, Queen of Scots (1542 – 1587), who inherited the Scottish throne as an infant after the death of her father, King James V. Her reign was fraught with death, conspiracy and treason, yet she became a romantic heroine. Her life story has inspired artists, poets and writers for centuries.
