About this artwork

Dürer’s prints were copied from very early on due to his commercial success. During Dürer’s lifetime more than 250 different copies after his prints were produced north of the Alps alone. One of the early northern copyists was Hieronymus Greff. In 1502, four years after Dürer’s first edition of ‘The Apocalypse’, Greff issued a copy of the work in Strasbourg. He faithfully reproduced Dürer’s designs, employing the same woodcut technique, keeping the exact dimensions and orientation, but replacing Dürer‘s monogram with his own. Only knowledgeable clients would realise that Greff’s prints were copies.
