About this artwork
In Antwerp, Hieronymus and Johannes Wierix produced more than fifty engravings after Dürer prints. Their copies are masterpieces in their own right and consequently, in addition to Dürer’s monogram, most of them bear marks that identify the engraver. Johannes Wierix’s faithful ‘Melencolia I’ of 1602 is inscribed at the bottom just outside the image. Many of these impressions were trimed and sold as genuine Dürers. This impression still shows the inscription however.
